Kinonimbus – A god’s usual day
chapter 01: It was hot… that’s why.

Special Thanks to:
Shibaebi for the character design.
Miquel Vich for the original music.

I made this animation just for fun.
It is done in 3ds Max, and some other plugins and programs.
It took some time to render the hair and do the calculations with just 2 computers, had to optimize a lot.
All the backgrounds are CG too, the clouds too.

Well looking fowards to do the second part, I already thought of ways to improve the creation process :)

ganbarimasu!

Here some of the creation process:

The amazing work that Shibaebi did for the Character concepts, character sheets, details, expressions…. Otherwise this animation wouldnt look that good for sure!

ome of the 3D creation process:

I started by modelling the anatomy, to make sure I didn understand how the god could move logicaly, after some mudbox modellin I did the retopology by hand in 3ds MAX.

Here the two models side by side:
mudbox and retopology

The eyes was something important, so I spent some time creating a nice looking eyes, and also creating a rig where I could change the size of the pupil but also change the iris radius too.

The ears are mushrooms, this is because the initial concep was that he was a kind of God of the forest that could enjoy mushrooms a lot.

I did some various tests with the fur until I got it right,

There is other details like the theeth and the mouth interior that has some work too.

The rig was done in CAT and then adding some spline ik to the ears with a flex to create the wind effect.

And of course the backgrounds and terrain.

At first I was planning to use photo for the sky, but didn’t match so well with the character… so I end up creating everything in CG.
I found a way to create clouds in 3dsMAX and FumeFX that worked really well:

The forest was also a bit of a challange, because I had only 2 machines to render, so needed something quite optimized and “easy” to render

Then there is the Compositing part and Coloring:

3d monster after effects

And then there is some FX:

The explosion, was really soft and smooth, not good for the purpose, I wanted to exagerate the effect… so I was thinking of using some Anime techninques to emphaise the effect

Well more or less this is a resume of the process.

It took some moth to have it all ready, because I created the monster to be able to perform in a second chapter too, so was not only for this short animation.

Hope you enjoy it!! Here some funny Rig Test that I did, quite weird… ( is just moving the controllers up and down )
